Amy y la mujer que mató al gótico

Hace ya un tiempo que quería escribir este post pero lo he tenido que retrasar por diferentes motivos.

En los últimos meses he tenido un par de sorpresas musicalmente hablando. Tal como os habrá pasado a much@s, durante los últimos años he sufrido un bombardeo de anuncios televisivos para que me baje a mi móvil las melodías de moda. No obstante, una de ellas consiguió picar mi curiosidad: This is the Life de Amy MacDonald. Aunque en los anuncios solo se puede oír el estribillo Ad Nauseam, me llamó la atención su voz. En una industria musical dominada por voces clonadas unas de otras y de canciones de melodías fáciles y de una calidad musical bastante baja (por usar un eufemismo), me ha sorprendido muy gratamente el escuchar una voz con personalidad. Me volví a sorprender gratamente al escuchar el LP entero y encontrar un disco redondo y de una gran calidad. Letras sencillas pero inteligentes y una muy buena producción hacen que todavía me quede algo de esperanza en la música Mainstream. Por cierto, si os preguntáis qué tiene que ver todo ésto con las gaitas escuchad el disco de arriba a abajo y lo sabréis. Solo me queda ofrecerme para acompañarla si se decide a tocar en Barcelona :)




La segunda sorpresa ha venido de mano de Markcohen. Él me presentó de forma musical a Hellblinki Sextet a través del Bella Ciao! en un Auf Wiedersehen Weimarer Republik hace unos meses y hace unas semanas tuvimos la suerte de conocer en persona a Valerie, la cantante y acordeonista del grupo. Venía directamente del Whitby Gothic Weekend de tocar con The Last Dance y ganándose el apelativo de "la mujer que mató al Gótico" al participar en la versión conjunta con el grupo de You Are My Sunshine. Solo puedo decir que espero con ganas su primer disco en solitario. Mientras, seguiré escuchando los discos de Hellblinki Sextet. A medio camino entre el cabaret burlesque, el punk rock, la guerrilla sonora y los ritmos sureños, Hellblinki Sextet marcan tendencia en el panorama underground. A todos aquellos a los que les guste los ritmos oscuros y las canciones de taberna, y que disfruten tanto de Tom Waits como de Goran Bregovic , les encantará este grupo. Por el momento han sacado al mercado 4 discos: Oratory, A Pirate Broadcast, The Hellblinki Sextet y X-mas from Hellblinki. AMY AND THE WOMAN WHO KILLED GOTH

I have been thinking of writting this post for a long time but for several reasons I have been posposing it, now it's the time.

In the last months I have had a couple of musical surprises. As it probably had happened to a lot of you, last years I have been suffering a television advertisings bombing about downloading to my movile phone trendy melodies. Nevertheless, one of them has aroused my curiosity: This Is the Life by Amy MacDonald. Although in the ads you can only listen the refrain Ad Nauseam, her voice attracted my attention. I was appily surprised to hear a voice with personality in a musical industry dominated by cloned voices, cheesy melodies songs and a quite low musical quality -to use an euphemism-. I was happily surprised again when listening the LP, as I found a really round recording and with a great quality. Plain and intelligent lyrics and a really good production work make me keep a bit of hope on musical mainstream. By the way, If you are wondering what all this has to do with bagpipes, just listen the record from head to toe (if a record is able to have toes) and you will know. The last thing for me to do now is to offer myself as a side bagpiper if she decides to come and play in Barcelona :)

The second surprise came by the hand of Markcohen. He introduced Hellblinki Sextet to me -musically speaking- through Bella Ciao! in one of his Auf Wiedersehen Weimarer Republik sessions some moths ago. A few weeks ago, we have the luck of meeting in person Valerie, the band's singer and accordionist. She came directly from Whitby Gothic Weekend where she played with The Last Dance and where she got the title of "the Woman who killed Goth", when she participated in the cover of You Are My Sunshine. I can only say that I am dying to listen her solo album. Meanwhile, I will keep listening to Hellblinki Sextet. Halfway between cabaret burlesque, punk rock, sonic guerrilla and southern rythms, Hellblinki Sextet create a new tendency in the underground music situation. All of those who like dark rythms and tabern songs, and that enjoy Tom Waits and Goran Bregovic equally, will love this band.
